ONE NIGHT STAND

Inspired by Audre Lorde’s “The Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power,” this work examines how intimacy has been flattened and misinterpreted in contemporary culture. Lorde writes that the eroticism has been reduced to the merely pornographic, a distortion that separates sensuality from emotional depth.

The erotic has often been misnamed by men and used against women. It has been made into the confused, the trivial, the psychotic, the plasticized sensation. For this reason, we have often turned away from the exploration and consideration of the erotic as a source of power and information, confusing it with its opposite, the pornographic.”

Through the of body and fabric as material, this piece explores the sensation of bodies coming together in an intimacy that never reaches fruition. The figures as shadows become stand-ins for presence without connection, bodies that occupy a bed and merely serve as stimulation. “The pornographic emphasizes sensation without feeling.” The work questions the physical body versus the intimate body.
